Exploring Wayanad in August 2023

  1. Day 1: Chembra Peak
    30 minutes (10 miles) from Kalpetta

    Start your day with a trek to the Chembra Peak, one of the highest peaks in Wayanad. The trek is about 4 hours long and takes you through a beautiful forest and grasslands. You will be awed by the heart-shaped lake that is en route. The climb is steep but the view from the top of the peak makes it worth the effort. After the trek, head to the Pookode Lake. The lake is surrounded by lush greenery and is a great spot for boating. Wind up your day with a visit to the Banasura Sagar Dam, the second-largest earth dam in Asia. The view from the dam is stunning, and you can also go for a speed boat ride.

  2. Day 2: Edakkal Caves
    40 minutes (14 miles) from Kalpetta

    Start your day by visiting the Edakkal Caves. The caves are located on Ambukuthi Hills and are famous for their prehistoric carvings, dating back to 6000 BC. The trek to the caves is a bit steep but offers breathtaking views of the surrounding area. After exploring the caves, head to the Soochipara Falls. The falls are a three-tiered waterfall, and you can take a refreshing dip in the pool at the bottom. End your day with a visit to the Karapuzha Dam. The dam offers a stunning view of the surrounding valley and is a great spot to watch the sunset.

  3. Day 3: Thirunelli Temple
    50 minutes (18 miles) from Kalpetta

    Start your day with a visit to the Thirunelli Temple, located in a serene valley surrounded by mountains. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is a must-visit for its beautiful architecture and religious significance. After the temple visit, head to the Kuruva Island. The island is a protected river delta and is home to a variety of flora and fauna. You can take a bamboo rafting trip or go for a nature walk on the island. Wind up your day with a visit to the Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary is home to a variety of animals, including elephants, tigers, and deer, and is a great spot for wildlife enthusiasts.
