Exploring Wayanad in June 2023

  1. Day 1: Edakkal Caves
    25 minutes (10.5 km) from Kalpetta

    Start your day early and head to the famous Edakkal Caves which are believed to have been formed over 5000 years ago. The caves are located at an altitude of 1200 meters above sea level and offer a stunning view of the surrounding mountains. Spend the morning exploring the caves and learning about their historical significance. For lunch, head to the nearby town of Sultan Bathery and sample some delicious traditional Kerala cuisine. Spend your afternoon at the nearby Soochipara Waterfalls, which is approximately a 45-minute drive from Edakkal Caves. The waterfall is nestled in a beautiful valley and is a popular spot for swimming and picnics. In the evening, head back to Kalpetta and explore the local markets.

  2. Day 2: Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary
    25 minutes (10 km) from Kalpetta

    Begin your day with an early morning safari at the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary is home to several species of animals including tigers, elephants, leopards, and deer. The safari lasts for around 3 hours and is a great way to experience the beauty of nature and spot some wildlife. For lunch, head to the nearby town of Vythiri and sample some local delicacies. Spend your afternoon exploring the nearby Pookode Lake, which is approximately a 20-minute drive from the wildlife sanctuary. The lake is surrounded by lush green forests and is a popular spot for boating and picnics. In the evening, head back to Kalpetta and visit the ancient Jain Temple.

Recommendations:

If you have an extra day, consider visiting the Banasura Sagar Dam, which is approximately a 1-hour drive from Kalpetta. You can also go trekking in the nearby Chembra Peak. For adventure lovers, there are several options for camping, hiking and zip lining in Wayanad. Make sure to try some local snacks like banana chips and jackfruit chips.
