Exploring Sikkim in July 2023

  1. Day 1: Gangtok
    33 minutes (15.5 km) from Pakyong Airport

    Morning: Start your day by visiting the Enchey Monastery, a peaceful haven for meditation and prayer. Situated atop a hill, the monastery offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and the city.
    Afternoon: Head to Namgyal Institute of Tibetology, an important center for Tibetan studies and research. You can explore the museum showcasing rare and ancient artifacts, books and manuscripts.
    Evening: End your day at the bustling MG Marg, a popular pedestrian street for shopping and sampling local food. Try the popular local momos and thukpa.

  2. Day 2: Pelling
    2 hours 43 minutes (111 km) from Gangtok

    Morning: Visit the Pemayangtse Monastery, one of the oldest monasteries in Sikkim, dating back to the 17th century. The monastery houses precious antique idols and religious objects.
    Afternoon: Visit the Khecheopalri Lake, considered a sacred lake by both Buddhists and Hindus. Surrounded by lush green forest, the lake is known for its clear water and serene surroundings.
    Evening: Take a stroll through the Rabdentse Ruins, the former capital of Sikkim. The ruins are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and offer a glimpse into the rich history of the region.

  3. Day 3: Lachen
    4 hours 38 minutes (120 km) from Pelling

    Morning: Start your day early and head towards the Gurudongmar Lake, one of the highest lakes in the world. The lake is considered sacred by both Buddhists and Sikhs.
    Afternoon: Visit the Thangu Valley, a picturesque valley surrounded by snow-capped mountains and dotted with quaint villages.
    Evening: Relax and unwind in your homestay and enjoy local delicacies like thukpa, momos and chhang.

  4. Day 4: Yuksom
    4 hours (125 km) from Lachen

    Morning: Visit the Dubdi Monastery, the first monastery established in Sikkim in the 17th century. The monastery offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
    Afternoon: Trek to the Kanchenjunga Falls, a scenic waterfall surrounded by lush greenery. The trek takes around 2 hours and is an easy to moderate difficulty level.
    Evening: Visit the Norbugang Park, a beautiful park showcasing the historical importance of Sikkim. The park houses the famous Norbugang Chorten, a stupa built in the 16th century to mark the crowning of the first king of Sikkim.

Recommendations

Don't miss the opportunity to explore the Yumthang Valley, also called the Valley of Flowers, famous for its colorful blooms and hot springs. You can also take a day trip to the Nathu La Pass, a high-altitude mountain pass on the Indo-China border. Make sure to carry warm clothing as the temperature drops drastically at high altitudes.
