2-Day Madurai Itinerary in June 2023

  1. Day 1: Meenakshi Amman Temple

    Start your day by visiting the Meenakshi Amman Temple. Dedicated to Goddess Parvati, the temple is renowned for its stunning architecture, intricate carvings and colourful sculptures. After exploring the temple complex, head to the nearby Gandhi Museum for an insight into the life of Mahatma Gandhi. In the afternoon, visit the Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal, a 17th-century palace with a blend of Dravidian and Islamic styles. In the evening, catch the Sound and Light Show at Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal to learn more about the history of the palace.

  2. Day 2: Koodal Azhagar Temple and Pazhamudircholai
    20 minutes (5.5 km) from Meenakshi Amman Temple

    Begin your day by visiting the Koodal Azhagar Temple, one of the oldest temples in Madurai. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the temple is renowned for its exquisite carvings and sculptures. In the afternoon, head to the Pazhamudircholai Murugan Temple, situated on the outskirts of Madurai. Surrounded by lush green hills, the temple is dedicated to Lord Murugan and is believed to have been visited by Lord Rama during his exile. In the evening, take a stroll along the Vaigai River and witness the beautiful sunset.

If you have more time, visit the Thiruparankundram Murugan Temple, one of the six abodes of Lord Murugan, or the Vandiyur Mariamman Teppakulam, a popular temple tank where the Float Festival is held annually. You can also explore the local markets and taste the delicious Madurai cuisine, especially the famous Madurai Jigarthanda.
