Wayanad Adventure Itinerary - October 2023

  1. Day 1: Trek to Chembra Peak
    1 hour 20 minutes (25.6 miles) from Wayanad

    Start your adventure with an early morning trek to Chembra Peak, the highest peak in Wayanad. The trek to the peak takes around 3 hours and is a moderately difficult trail with stunning views of the valley. You will need to obtain a pass from the forest department to enter the area. In the afternoon, visit the Soochipara waterfalls, which is a 2 tiered waterfall cascading down 200 meters and surrounded by dense forests. You can take a dip in the natural pool at the bottom. In the evening, visit the Pookode Lake, a freshwater lake nestled amidst the hills. You can take a boat ride or go for a nature walk around the lake.

  2. Day 2: Explore Edakkal Caves and Banasura Sagar Dam
    1 hour 15 minutes (20.7 miles) from Chembra Peak

    Start your day by exploring the Edakkal Caves, a pre-historic rock shelter formed naturally due to a large split in a huge rock. The hike to the caves takes around 45 minutes. The caves have ancient petroglyphs and carvings that date back to the Neolithic era. In the afternoon, visit the Banasura Sagar Dam, the largest earth dam in India and take a speed boat ride around the dam. You can also trek to the nearby hills for a panoramic view of the dam and the surrounding mountains. In the evening, visit the Meenmutty waterfalls, which is a three-tiered waterfall cascading from a height of 300 meters. It is a 2 km trek to reach the falls, which is through a dense forest.

  3. Day 3: Wildlife Safari and Wayanad Heritage Museum
    1 hour 30 minutes (35.8 miles) from Banasura Sagar Dam

    Start your day with an early morning Wildlife Safari at the Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary. You can spot elephants, tigers, leopards, deer, and other wild animals in their natural habitat. After the safari, visit the Wayanad Heritage Museum, which showcases the rich tribal heritage and culture of Wayanad. The museum has a collection of artifacts, weapons, and tools used by the tribes of Wayanad. In the afternoon, visit the Karapuzha Dam, which is a popular picnic spot and offers a breathtaking view of the surrounding mountains. You can also indulge in boating and fishing in the reservoir.

If you have an extra day, you can visit the Kuruva Island, a dense evergreen forest on the banks of the Kabani river, which is home to rare species of birds, orchids, and herbs. You can also visit the Thirunelli Temple, an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu, located amidst the Brahmagiri hills.
