3-Day Nature Itinerary in Wayanad in October 2023

  1. Day 1: Pookode Lake
    24 minutes (8.7 miles) from Kalpetta Town

    Start your day by visiting the beautiful Pookode Lake which is situated in the lush green surroundings of the Western Ghats. Take a serene boat ride in the calm waters of the lake and enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings. Afternoon, head to the nearby Chain Tree, a large ficus tree with a legendary story, and learn about the folklore associated with it. In the evening, visit the Soochipara Waterfalls, a three-tiered waterfall with a pool beneath it where you can take a refreshing dip.

  2. Day 2: Banasura Sagar Dam
    1 hour 3 minutes (27.5 miles) from Pookode Lake

    Start your day by visiting the Banasura Sagar Dam, the largest earthen dam in India. Enjoy the breathtaking view of the Banasura hills and the crystal clear waters of the dam. Afternoon, visit the Meenmutty Waterfalls, one of the largest and most beautiful waterfalls in Wayanad. In the evening, head to the Kuruva Island, a serene and tranquil island formed by the Kabini River. Take a walk amidst the lush green forests and bamboo groves of the island.

  3. Day 3: Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary
    1 hour 17 minutes (33.3 miles) from Banasura Sagar Dam

    Start your day by visiting the Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary, home to a rich variety of flora and fauna. Take a guided safari and spot some of the amazing wildlife of Wayanad like elephants, tigers, leopards, and more. Afternoon, head to the Chembra Peak, the highest peak in Wayanad. Trek up the scenic trail to the top of the peak and enjoy the panoramic view of the surrounding mountains and valleys. In the evening, visit the Edakkal Caves, a set of prehistoric caves that have some amazing rock carvings and paintings.

Recommendations

You can also visit the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, the Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary, and the Pakshipathalam Bird Sanctuary if you are interested in wildlife and nature. You can also take a side trip to the nearby towns of Sulthan Bathery and Vythiri. To maximize your fun, try some of the local delicacies like bamboo rice, kadala curry, and pazham pori. Don't forget to pack some comfortable shoes and light rain gear as Wayanad experiences occasional showers in October.
