Two-Day Itinerary for Varkala, June 2023

  1. Day 1: Varkala Cliff Beach
    10 minutes (3.2 km) from Varkala Station

    Morning: Start your day with an early morning stroll on the Varkala Cliff Beach. The beach offers a breathtaking view of the Arabian Sea and is a perfect spot for watching the sunrise. You can also take a dip in the sea and enjoy some water sports.

    Afternoon: Head to the Janardhana Swamy Temple, a few minutes' walk from the beach. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is believed to be over 2000 years old. It is one of the oldest temples in Kerala and has a beautiful architecture.

    Evening: End your day by watching the sunset at the Varkala Beach. The beach is less crowded than the cliff beach and offers a peaceful environment to relax. You can also grab some street food or explore the local markets nearby.

  2. Day 2: Kappil Beach
    20 minutes (8.7 km) from Varkala Cliff Beach

    Morning: Start your day by visiting the Kappil Beach, a serene beach located at the confluence of the Arabian Sea and Kappil Lake. You can take a boat ride in the backwaters and explore the mangrove forests.

    Afternoon: Head to the Anjengo Fort, a historical fort built by the British East India Company in the 17th century. The fort offers a panoramic view of the sea and is a perfect spot for photography.

    Evening: End your day by visiting the Varkala Aquarium, located at a walking distance from the beach. The aquarium has a vast collection of marine life, including rare species of fish and turtles.

Recommendations

If you have some extra time, you can visit the Sivagiri Mutt, a spiritual center and the final resting place of Sree Narayana Guru, a social reformer and philosopher. You can also take a day trip to the nearby backwater destinations, such as Alleppey and Kumarakom, or explore the nearby villages and temples.
