Three-Day Family-Friendly Wayanad Itinerary in June 2023

  1. Day 1: Edakkal Caves
45 minutes (15 miles) from Kalpetta

Start your first day in Wayanad with an exciting visit to the Edakkal Caves, a prehistoric rock shelter formed naturally by a split in a huge boulder. Marvel at the Neolithic cave art, which dates back to over 8,000 years ago. The hike up to the caves is quite challenging, so start early in the morning, and bring plenty of water and snacks. You'll need about 3 hours to explore the caves, and be sure to wear comfortable hiking shoes and clothing. After lunch, visit the nearby Wayanad Heritage Museum, which houses a vast collection of tribal artifacts, weapons, and handicrafts. Finally, head to Chembra Peak, the highest peak in Wayanad, for panoramic views of the surrounding hills and valleys. The trek to the peak takes around 3 hours, so be sure to start early in the morning.

  2. Day 2: Banasura Sagar Dam and Meenmutty Falls
1 hour 25 minutes (30 miles) from Kalpetta

On your second day, visit the Banasura Sagar Dam, the largest earthen dam in India and the second-largest in Asia. Take a boat ride on the serene waters or go for a nature walk around the dam. The nearby Banasura Hill offers stunning views of the dam and the surrounding hills. After lunch, head to Meenmutty Falls, one of the most picturesque waterfalls in the region. The falls cascade down in three tiers, and the short trek to reach them is quite refreshing. You'll need around 2 hours to explore the falls, so plan accordingly. Finally, visit the Pookode Lake, a beautiful natural freshwater lake nestled amid the lush greenery of the Western Ghats. You can go boating on the lake or take a leisurely stroll along the walking trail.

  3. Day 3: Thirunelli Temple and Kuruvadweep
1 hour 40 minutes (35 miles) from Kalpetta

On your last day in Wayanad, visit the ancient Thirunelli Temple, which is surrounded by the stunning Brahmagiri Hills and the Papanasini River. The temple's intricate architecture and fascinating history are sure to enthrall you. After lunch, head to the Kuruvadweep (Kuruva Island), a serene river delta formed by the Kabini River. The island is home to a rich biodiversity of flora and fauna, including rare species of birds and butterflies. You can take a guided nature walk or go for a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear waters. You'll need around 3 hours to explore the island, so plan accordingly.

Recommendations

Don't miss the chance to experience a traditional Wayanadan village life experience at the Uravu Bamboo Grove or explore the wildlife at the Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary. You can also take a day trip to the nearby Coorg, which is known as the "Scotland of India," to experience its rich coffee plantations, waterfalls, and wildlife.

Maximize your fun by staying in a treehouse or a homestay in the heart of nature. Don't forget to try the local delicacies such as the Kalan, a unique curry made with ripe plantains, and the Puttu and Kadala Curry, a traditional breakfast dish made with steamed rice flour and chickpeas.
