Four-Day Volunteering Itinerary in Kathmandu - June 2023

  1. Day 1: Boudhanath Stupa
    15 minutes (4.5 km) from Tribhuvan International Airport

    In the morning, head to Boudhanath Stupa, one of Nepal's largest stupas, where you can volunteer at the nearby monasteries. After a satisfying volunteering experience, visit the nearby Boudha Market, which is famous for its traditional handicrafts and souvenirs. In the evening, head to the rooftop restaurants surrounding the stupa and enjoy a peaceful evening with a scenic view of the stupa.

  2. Day 2: Swayambhunath Stupa
    25 minutes (6.5 km) from Boudhanath Stupa

    Start your day by visiting Swayambhunath Stupa, also known as the Monkey Temple, where you can volunteer at the nearby animal shelter. Afterward, visit the National Museum of Nepal, where you can learn about the country's history and culture. In the evening, head to Thamel and enjoy the local nightlife with traditional food and live music.

  3. Day 3: Kathmandu Durbar Square
    20 minutes (5.5 km) from Swayambhunath Stupa

    Begin your day by visiting the historic Kathmandu Durbar Square, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can volunteer at the nearby community school and help the children with their studies. Afterward, walk around the square and admire the ancient buildings and temples. In the evening, head to the Garden of Dreams, a neo-classical historical garden, for a peaceful evening stroll.

  4. Day 4: Pashupatinath Temple
    20 minutes (6.5 km) from Kathmandu Durbar Square

    On your last day, visit the Pashupatinath Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the most sacred Hindu temple in Nepal. You can volunteer at the nearby old age home and spend some quality time with the elderly. Afterward, visit the nearby Guheshwori Temple, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva's consort, Goddess Parvati. In the evening, head to the nearby Shankha Park for a peaceful evening with a beautiful view of the Bagmati River.

Recommendations

If you have extra time, try visiting Patan Durbar Square, Bhaktapur Durbar Square, and Kopan Monastery. You can also go on a day trip to Nagarkot, which is famous for its sunrise and sunset view over the Himalayas. To maximize your fun, try attending a local festival, such as the Bisket Jatra or the Rato Machhindranath festival.
