Exploring Coorg's Natural Wonders: A One-Day Itinerary

  1. 8:00AM: Omkareshwara Temple
10 minutes (2.1 km) from Madikeri

Start your day with a visit to the beautiful Omkareshwara Temple, built in a mix of Gothic and Islamic styles with a central pool that draws in flocks of pigeons. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is said to have been built by Linga Rajendra II in 1820.

  2. 10:00AM: Abbey Falls
30 minutes (7.2 km) from Omkareshwara Temple

Take in the stunning natural beauty of Abbey Falls, located amidst coffee plantations and spice estates. The waterfall is at its fullest during the monsoon season, so July is the perfect time to experience its full glory. Be prepared for a short but steep hike down to the falls.

  3. 12:00PM: Raja's Seat
40 minutes (12.3 km) from Abbey Falls

Enjoy a scenic lunch break at Raja's Seat, a beautiful garden with views of the surrounding hills and valleys. The garden was a favourite spot of the Kodagu kings, who would come here to watch the sunset and relax with their consorts.

  4. 2:00PM: Dubare Elephant Camp
    45 minutes (19.5 km) from Raja's Seat

Get up close and personal with gentle giants at the Dubare Elephant Camp. Here, you can watch elephants being bathed and fed, and even take an elephant ride through the forest. Don't forget to bring some bananas to feed the elephants!

  5. 4:00PM: Nisargadhama
20 minutes (12.2 km) from Dubare Elephant Camp

End your day at Nisargadhama, a sprawling natural island formed by the Cauvery river. Here, you can walk across a hanging bridge, take a boat ride, and even spot deer and rabbits at the mini zoo. There are also stalls selling local handicrafts and souvenirs.

Recommendations

Coorg is a nature lover's paradise, but if you have time for more, consider visiting the Iruppu Falls, Talacauvery, or the Bhagamandala Temple. If you're up for a day trip, head to the nearby Nagarhole National Park for a chance to see tigers, leopards, and elephants in the wild. And don't forget to try the local Coorgi cuisine, which features plenty of spicy meat dishes and freshly brewed coffee.
