Exploring Kedarnath on a Shoestring Budget in July 2023

  1. Day 1: Kedarnath Temple
    10 minutes (2 km) from Sonprayag

    Visit the famous Kedarnath Temple in the morning. It is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, and it is believed that visiting this temple washes away all sins. In the afternoon, trek to Gandhi Sarovar Lake, which is about 1.5 km from the temple. It offers a fantastic view of the Himalayan ranges. In the evening, you can attend the evening aarti at the temple and experience the divine energy.

  2. Day 2: Vasuki Tal trek
    2 hours (14 km) from Kedarnath Temple

    In the morning, start your trek to Vasuki Tal, a beautiful high altitude lake. The trek is challenging, and it takes about 6-7 hours to reach. But the view of the snow-capped Himalayas and the serenity of the lake makes it worth it. Carry some food and water with you. In the evening, return to Kedarnath Temple and relax.

  3. Day 3: Shankaracharya Samadhi and Bhairav Temple
    5 minutes (1 km) from Kedarnath Temple

    Visit the Shankaracharya Samadhi in the morning. It is a memorial dedicated to Adi Shankaracharya, who established the four dhams in India. The temple is located near the Kedarnath Temple and offers a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains. In the afternoon, visit the Bhairav Temple, which is about 2 km from the Kedarnath Temple. It is believed that Lord Bhairav guards the Kedarnath Temple, and visiting this temple completes the pilgrimage.

  4. Day 4: Gauri Kund and Guptkashi
    40 minutes (20 km) from Kedarnath Temple

    In the morning, take a dip in the holy Gauri Kund, which is believed to be the spot where Goddess Parvati meditated to win Lord Shiva's heart. It is located about 30 km from the Kedarnath Temple. In the afternoon, visit Guptkashi, which is about 10 km from Gauri Kund. It is a small town with many temples and is believed to be the place where Lord Shiva proposed to Goddess Parvati.

You can also visit the Triyuginarayan Temple, which is about 25 km from Kedarnath. It is believed to be the place where Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati got married. You can also take a day trip to Badrinath, which is about 240 km from Kedarnath. It is one of the four dhams and is believed to be the place where Lord Vishnu meditated. To maximize your fun, try the local food and shop for souvenirs.
