Two Days in Thekkady: A Memorable Itinerary

  1. Day 1: Periyar National Park
5 minutes (1.1 miles) from Thekkady

Start your day by exploring the Periyar National Park, one of the most popular wildlife sanctuaries in South India. Take a morning boat ride on the Periyar Lake, where you can see elephants, tigers, and other wildlife in their natural habitat. Afterward, explore the spice plantations and learn about the spices that grow in the region. In the afternoon, take a guided trek through the park's dense forest and behold the wild elephants and other flora and fauna. End your day with a Kathakali dance performance, a traditional form of Indian dance, which depicts ancient stories through facial expressions and body movements.

  2. Day 2: Mangala Devi Temple and Pandikuzhi
40 minutes (16.3 miles) from Periyar National Park

On your second day, start with a visit to the Mangala Devi Temple, a Hindu temple located on the top of a hill in the Periyar forest. The temple is known for its stunning architecture and panoramic views of Thekkady. Afterward, head to Pandikuzhi, a picturesque spot with cascading waterfalls and a beautiful stream. Take a dip in the cool waters, or simply relax on the rocks and enjoy the serene surroundings. In the evening, visit the Kadathanadan Kalari Centre and watch a live demonstration of Kalaripayattu, a traditional form of martial arts native to Kerala. You'll be amazed by the flexibility and stamina of the performers as they execute breathtaking moves.
