Exploring Varkala in October 2023

  1. Day 1: Varkala Beach
    5 minutes (0.3 miles) from Varkala Cliff

    In the morning, head to Varkala Beach to enjoy the soft sand and clear waters. You can take a dip, relax in the sun or simply enjoy a walk on the beach. For lunch, try one of the local cafes or restaurants for some fresh seafood or traditional Kerala cuisine. In the afternoon, take a stroll along the cliff with stunning views of the sea. As the sun sets, find a spot to enjoy a beautiful sunset view. In the evening, head to the nearby Janardhana Swamy Temple, one of the oldest temples in Kerala, to witness the evening pooja.

  2. Day 2: Kappil Beach and Anjengo Fort
    15 minutes (5.6 miles) from Varkala Beach

    Drive to Kappil Beach for a peaceful morning, away from the crowds. Take a walk along the shore, breathe in the fresh air and enjoy the calming sound of the waves. For lunch, try a local seaside restaurant and enjoy some authentic Kerala cuisine. After lunch, visit the historic Anjengo Fort, built by the British East India Company in the 17th century. Learn about the fort's rich history and enjoy the scenic views from the top. In the evening, head back to Varkala Beach to enjoy the sunset and dinner at one of the beachside restaurants.

  3. Day 3: Varkala Lighthouse and Sivagiri Mutt
    20 minutes (3.4 miles) from Anjengo Fort

    Visit Varkala Lighthouse early in the morning for a great sunrise view. Climb the lighthouse for a panoramic view of the Arabian Sea and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. After breakfast, head to the Sivagiri Mutt, a popular pilgrimage centre that was built in memory of the great philosopher and social reformer Sri Narayana Guru. Learn about his teachings and visit the Samadhi where he was laid to rest. In the afternoon, head back to Varkala Beach for some rest and relaxation. At night, head to the beautiful Odayam Beach for a peaceful and serene view of the moon and stars.

Recommendations

Make sure to try the local seafood dishes, such as Karimeen Pollichathu, Meen Vevichathu and Fish Curry. If you have time, consider taking a day trip to the nearby backwaters of Kerala or visiting the Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary. To maximize your fun, consider taking a surfing or yoga class in Varkala.
