Start your day by visiting the Periyar National Park, which is situated on the banks of the Periyar Lake. The park is known for its rich biodiversity, and you can spot several species of flora and fauna here. Opt for a guided trek through the park and take in the stunning views of the lake and the Western Ghats. In the afternoon, you can go bamboo rafting or take a boat ride to spot animals such as elephants, tigers, and wild boars. End your day by watching the traditional Kalaripayattu martial art show in the evening.

50 minutes (18.9 miles) from Periyar National Park

Start your day early with a visit to the Mangala Devi Temple, located in the heart of the Periyar forest. The temple is only open during the Chithra Pournami festival, which usually falls in April, but you can still admire its beautiful architecture from the outside. After that, head out on a thrilling jeep safari into the hills of Thekkady. The safari takes you through rugged terrain, and you can spot several species of wildlife such as the Indian bison, deer, and wild elephants. End your day with some delicious local cuisine at the Spice Village restaurant.

Recommendations

Thekkady has several other attractions such as the Kadathanadan Kalari Centre which offers tours of the martial arts school, the Elephant Junction where you can bathe and ride elephants, and a range of spice gardens where you can learn about the region's famous spices such as cardamom and pepper. If you want to take a day trip, you can visit the nearby hill station of Munnar, which is known for its tea plantations and stunning views. To maximize your fun, try to book your activities in advance, especially during the peak season. Wear sturdy shoes and carry a hat and sunscreen as the weather can get hot and humid.
