Three-Day Nature Itinerary in Wayanad in July 2023

  1. Day 1: Chembra Peak
1 hour (10 miles) from Kalpetta

Begin your day with a hike to Chembra Peak, the highest peak in Wayanad. The trek to the top is a 5km uphill climb that will take about 3-4 hours. The first 2km of the trek is easy, but the final stretch is steep and challenging even for experienced hikers. Once you reach the top, you'll be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the entire district. Spend some time here, take in the beauty of the surroundings, and capture the stunning views. After lunch at a local restaurant, visit the nearby Soochipara Waterfalls. It takes a 15-minute walk from the parking area to reach the waterfall. Enjoy a swim in the natural pool at the base of the falls.

  2. Day 2: Banasura Sagar Dam
1 hour 10 minutes (27 miles) from Chembra Peak

Start your day with a visit to the Banasura Sagar Dam, the largest earthen dam in India. The dam is surrounded by lush green hills and offers a stunning view of the Banasura Lake. You can take a speedboat ride on the lake or go trekking in the nearby hills. After lunch, visit the Pookode Lake, a freshwater lake surrounded by forests and hills. Hire a paddle boat and explore the tranquil lake, or hike through the surrounding forests. End your day at Lakkidi View Point, which offers a panoramic view of the entire Wayanad district.

  3. Day 3: Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary
1 hour 20 minutes (33 miles) from Banasura Sagar Dam

On your last day, head to the Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary, home to a variety of wildlife including elephants, tigers, leopards, and deer. You can take a guided jeep safari through the sanctuary in the morning or evening. After the safari, visit the Edakkal Caves, a prehistoric site famous for its ancient rock art. The caves are located on a hill, and it takes about a 45-minute trek to reach the top. Finally, end your trip with a visit to the Kuruvadweep Island, a river island surrounded by dense forests. You can take a bamboo raft ride on the river or hike through the forest trails.
