A 4-Day "City Experiences" Itinerary in Varanasi, July 2023

  1. Day 1: Assi Ghat
    Located 10 minutes (2.2 km) from Varanasi Junction Railway Station

    Start your day with a serene visit to Assi Ghat, one of the oldest and most famous Ghats in Varanasi. Take a peaceful morning stroll along the Ganges and watch the locals performing their morning rituals. You can also hire a boat to watch the sunrise and get a panoramic view of the Ghats. In the afternoon, visit the famous Kashi Vishwanath Temple, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. End your day with a delightful evening Aarti ceremony at the Ganges.

  2. Day 2: Sarnath
    Located 30 minutes (10 km) from Assi Ghat

    Spend your second day exploring the history and culture of Sarnath, the place where Buddha delivered his first sermon. Visit the famous Dhamekh Stupa that marks the spot where Buddha gave his first sermon. Don't miss the Ashoka Pillar that has a four-lion capital, which is now the national emblem of India. In the afternoon, visit the Sarnath Museum that houses the archaeological remains of Sarnath. End your day with some shopping at the local market for unique souvenirs.

  3. Day 3: Ramnagar Fort
    Located 25 minutes (10 km) from Sarnath

    On your third day, visit the Ramnagar Fort, situated on the eastern bank of the Ganges. The fort houses a museum that exhibits vintage cars, palanquins, and weapons used by the royal family. You can also witness the famous Ramnagar Ramlila, a theatrical enactment of the Ramayana, which takes place during Dussehra. In the afternoon, visit the Bharat Kala Bhavan Museum, which showcases a vast collection of paintings, sculptures, and textiles from different parts of India.

  4. Day 4: Manikarnika Ghat
    Located 20 minutes (2.5 km) from Ramnagar Fort

    End your trip with a visit to Manikarnika Ghat, one of the oldest and most important Ghats in Varanasi. It is believed that cremation at this Ghat provides Moksha (salvation) to the soul. Take a boat ride on the Ganges to witness the rituals of life and death at the Ghat. You can also visit the nearby Harishchandra Ghat, another famous cremation Ghat in Varanasi. In the evening, enjoy a stroll through the vibrant streets of Varanasi and indulge in some local street food.

Don't miss the famous Banaras Hindu University, which houses the New Vishwanath Temple and has a vast campus with museums, parks and other attractions. You can also take a day trip to Chunar Fort or Chandraprabha Wildlife Sanctuary for a more adventurous experience. To maximize your fun, try attending a classical music or dance performance in Varanasi, or explore the city's art galleries and street art.
