Experience Rome in Two Days

  1. Day 1: Vatican City and Ancient Rome
30 minutes (2.5 miles) from Ciampino Airport

Begin your explorations of Rome with a visit to the Vatican City, a city-state surrounded by Rome. It is the smallest country in the world but you can spend hours exploring the Vatican museums and St. Peter's Basilica. To avoid the long lines, book your tickets in advance and arrive early in the morning.

Next up is the iconic Colosseum, an enormous amphitheatre built in 80 AD. It is one of Rome's most popular landmarks, so it is advisable to arrive early or book a tour in advance. Taking a guided tour will provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the history and architecture of the structure.

After enjoying lunch, head to the Pantheon, a former temple dedicated to all the gods of Ancient Rome. It is famous for its incredible dome and you will be able to admire the architecture more closely as well as learning about its history.

    Estimated time: 6 hours
    Distance: 4.5 miles
  2. Day 2: Iconic Roman Landmarks
20 minutes (1.5 miles) from Trastevere

On the second day, start with a visit to the Trevi Fountain, one of the most iconic landmarks in Rome. It was built in 1762 and features the god of the sea, Neptune. Throw a coin into the fountain with your right hand over your left shoulder and superstition says you will return to Rome.

Next, visit the Spanish Steps. This is the widest staircase in Europe and it has 135 steps. At the top, enjoy beautiful views of Rome.

Lastly, visit the Piazza Navona. It is a vibrant square in the heart of Rome with three magnificent fountains and the grand baroque Church of Sant'Agnese in Agone. Enjoy a cup of coffee at one of the outdoor cafes and watch street performers and artists.

Useful tips:

Although there are many more attractions to see, with only two days in Rome, this itinerary aims to provide a taste of the best that the city has to offer. If you have more time, add in a visit to the Castel Sant'Angelo, the Borghese Gallery, or spend more time exploring the streets of Trastevere. For those with less time, consider cutting out the Pantheon or the Spanish Steps. Be aware that many museums are closed on Mondays, so plan your visit accordingly.
