The Vatican Museums showcase more than 20,000 works of art from Roman sculptures, Etruscan artworks, and Renaissance paintings. Be sure to check out the Sistine Chapel and its famous ceiling painted by Michelangelo, and then head to St. Peter's Basilica for a glimpse of Renaissance and Baroque architecture.
The Colosseum is the most popular attraction in Rome, and for good reason. This massive amphitheater is one of the most iconic remnants of Ancient Rome where you can step back in time and explore the ancient lifestyles. Afterward, visit the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill to see ruins that date back to 7th century BC where you can glimpse into everyday life in Ancient Rome.
Visit The Pantheon, a well-preserved temple that was first a pagan then turned Christian church. Next, head to Piazza Navona, one of Rome's most famous squares, to enjoy street musicians, artists, and gelato vendors. Lastly, throw a coin into the Trevi Fountain, an iconic landmark featured in many movies, while making a wish to return to Rome.
If you have more time, explore the Catacombs of St. Callixtus or visit Villa Borghese where you can see works of art by Bernini and Caravaggio. Alternatively, if you have less time, you can skip the Roman Forum to shorten the second-day itinerary. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes as most of Rome's attractions require plenty of walking.
