Start your first day in DC by contributing to the National Mall clean-up effort. The National Mall is an iconic landmark where people come together for events, rallies, and sightseeing but it is a massive area that needs regular maintenance. Spend a few hours picking up trash, raking leaves, and planting flora alongside other volunteers.
Get involved in ending hunger in DC by volunteering at the Capital Area Food Bank. They provide meals to people who are in need by sourcing wholesome and nourishing food. You will work in their warehouse, sorting donations, packing boxes, and distributing them to the community.
Make a tangible impact in the community by volunteering with Habitat for Humanity. You can assist in constructing, repairing, painting, or landscaping homes for families in need. All volunteers will get proper training so that even without any experience, you’ll be able to contribute to making decent and affordable housing available to low-income families in DC.
If you have an extra day, you can contribute to the community in other ways as well - volunteering at animal shelters, community centers, and local farms, to name a few. You can also spend the day visiting the free museums and historical monuments in the vicinity of the National Mall.
If you have less than 3 days, you can skip the National Mall clean-up and dedicate more time to food distribution and Habitat for Humanity. If you have additional time, you can venture outside of DC to National Harbor, Maryland, and experience the different attractions, like the Capital Wheel or the Tanger Outlets.
