Start your family trip with an early morning journey to one of the most picturesque locations in Gulmarg, Alpather Lake. This glacial lake is only accessible through trekking. Situated at the base of Apharwat Peak, the lake is surrounded by a canopy of fir and pine trees. The 12 km trek will take you through serene meadows that exude beauty and charm.
Take the family to experience the renowned Gulmarg Gondola, one of the highest in the world. It is a two-stage ropeway which connects Gulmarg to Apharwat Peak. The view from the cable car is breathtaking, so remember to bring your cameras along. Afterwards, head to the Main Market to indulge in some souvenir shopping. The market is bursting with a range of Kashmiri textiles, handicrafts, and spices.
Check out the natural beauty and splendid landscape of Strawberry Valley. It is a must-visit for families due to its peaceful atmosphere and spacious strawberry fields. Challenge your family to an outer circle walk, a 10 km hike that will take you through picture-perfect terrain. Keep an eye out for black bears on this hike.
End your trip with visits to Baba Reshi Shrine and Ningli Nallah, both calm and peaceful locations that add to the tranquility of the Gulmarg experience. Legend has it that Baba Reshi, considered the patron saint of the area, worked many miracles in this Sufi shrine. Take a dip in the ice-cold waters of Ningli Nallah, a stream that flows between rocky cliffs- sure to leave you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.
If you have extra time, visit the Gulmarg Ski Resort or attempt the scenic trek to Tosa Maidan. However, if you have limited time, stay in town to explore more of the Main Market and try local delicacies such as Rogan Josh and Dum Aloo. If you visit during heavy snow, be advised that many outdoor activities will be closed and the travel time estimates on the itinerary should be double checked.
