Four Days in Athens

  1. Day 1: The Acropolis
10 minutes (1.2 km) from Syntagma Square

The Acropolis is the most iconic site in Athens and definitely worth a visit for all history and architecture enthusiasts. The ancient citadel houses several buildings like the Parthenon, the Propylaia, and the Erechtheion. Be sure to bring comfortable shoes and climb the steps to see the stunning panoramic view of the city from the top.

  2. Day 2: The National Archaeological Museum
20 minutes (3.5 km) from The Acropolis

Visitors can spend hours exploring the National Archaeological Museum, which is home to an impressive collection of ancient Greek artifacts, including sculptures, pottery, jewelry, and even frescoes. Highlights include the Mask of Agamemnon and the Antikythera Mechanism. Audio guides are available.

  3. Day 3: Plaka
15 minutes (1.8 km) from The National Archaeological Museum

This ancient neighborhood at the foot of the Acropolis is one of the oldest in Athens. A cozy labyrinth of picturesque alleyways, neoclassical mansions, and quaint shops selling antiques, souvenirs, and traditional Greek products, Plaka is loved by locals and tourists alike. Be sure to try some delicious Greek food while there - we recommend "The Athenian" for gyros.

  4. Day 4: The Temple of Olympian Zeus
20 minutes (1.7 km) from Plaka

A leftover from the city's ancient past, Olympieion is one of the largest and grandest temples in Greece. The temple's construction began in the 6th century BCE, but was not completed for centuries, due to wars and financial difficulties. In the Roman period, the emperor Hadrian finished the project, adding famous columns and decoration. Today, the visitor will see some of the 104 columns that originally surrounded the temple, along with Corinthian capitals and other features.

Useful tips

Athens has a lot more to offer than this itinerary can cover, so if you have more time, consider visiting the Ancient Agora, the Benaki Museum, or the Byzantine Museum. Or take a day trip to nearby attractions like the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion or the Temple of Hephaestus in Athens. Conversely, if you have less time, consider focusing only on The Acropolis and Plaka. Lastly, the best times to visit any outdoor sites are early morning or late afternoon, as Athens can get extremely hot during the summer.
