Start your day by exploring the fascinating Edakkal Caves, located in the Ambukuthi Hills. These ancient caves host impressive petroglyphs that bewitchingly recount historic tales of the region. To get there, you can hire a taxi from Kalpetta, and plan to get there early in the morning to avoid long queues. The hike to these caves is a 0.5km steep ascent, but once you witness the cave art and the stunning view from the top, it's all worth it.
After admiring the history in the caves, it's time to gear up and hike the Chembra Peak. It's an 8km long trek comprising lush green hills, refreshing waterfalls and wildlife. Make sure you pack your lunch to savor it on the top, where you'll be rewarded with a breathtaking view. Keep in mind that this is a moderately difficult trek, so ensure you have suitable trekking gear and attire.
Start your second day by heading to the rejuvenating Meenmutty Falls, nestled deep within the forest. The waterfall is a three-tiered cascade that collectively falls to a height of 300m, making it one of the highest waterfalls in Kerala. You can take a 2km hike to ascend to the waterfall or hire a jeep from the entry. Make sure you take a refreshing bath at the base of the falls and enjoy the serene natural landscape.
Conclude your trip by spending some time in the enthralling Kuruva Island, a secluded island located in the middle of the Kabini River. This uninhabited island is home to a variety of species, including rare birds, butterflies, and orchids. You'll need to take a bamboo rafting trip to get there, which will take about 10-15 minutes. Upon reaching the island, you can trek through the 2km circular path that runs in the middle of the forest. It's a peaceful and serene place to relax and unwind in nature.
If you have more time, you can add some other must-visit places such as Pookode Lake, Banasura Sagar Dam, and Soochippara Falls. For adventure seekers, you can also try bison sighting or night camping at Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary. If you have less time, you can skip Chembra Peak. Keep in mind that trekking in monsoon is not advisable and always carry extra food and water.
