Begin your Sikkim exploration with the scenic capital city of Gangtok. Start your day by visiting the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology, a prestigious research center that also showcases Tibetan culture and history. From there, head to the Enchey Monastery, a serene 200-year-old sanctuary set amidst pine trees. Then, take a 20-minute drive to the Rumtek Monastery, home to numerous valuable artifacts and relics of previous rinpoches (religious heads).
On your second day, set your sights on the picturesque town of Pelling. The Pemayangtse Monastery, built-in 1705 AD, should be your first stop. The intricate wooden carvings and ancient Buddhist manuscripts will undoubtedly awe you. Head on to the Khecheopalri Lake, which is considered a sacred place among both Buddhists and Hindus. This magnificent spot is surrounded by lush forests and stunning mountains.
For the final day of your trip, explore the remote village of Lachung. Begin with the 100-foot-tall Bhim Nala Waterfall, a stunning and peaceful location with water that reflects the surrounding sky. Then, visit the Yume Samdong (Zero Point), a settlement located at an altitude of 15,300 feet and offers stunning views of the snow-capped mountains. End your trip with a trek to the heavenly Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary, home to over 40 species of Rhododendrons.
If you have more time, visit the beautiful Gurudongmar Lake or the famous Nathula Pass. For a more extended trip, extend your stay in Lachung and go valley hopping to explore the Yumthang Valley. If you have a shorter trip, skip some of the monasteries or limit your trekking to make the most of your time. Always carry cash for the road and be cautious during the monsoon season from July-September.
