A perfect start to your Varkala trip is visiting the Varkala Beach. The calm waves of the Arabian Sea crash onto the black sand creating a serene ambiance for visitors. You can take a stroll, swim, or even try surfing at the beach. Enjoy some freshly prepared seafood at one of the many shacks lined up on the beach, or indulge in some retail therapy at one of the many shops nearby. At sunset, you can witness a beautiful sight of the sun setting into the vast Arabian sea.
Sivagiri Mutt is a serene ashram located on a hilltop. The ashram is dedicated to Shri Narayana Guru, a philosopher, and social reformer. Once you reach the top, you can experience inner peace by meditating in the ashram's meditation center. You can also explore the ashram's other buildings, including the museum showcasing Shri Narayana Guru's life, beliefs, and teachings. The best time to visit is during the Sivagiri pilgrimage festival held in December-January.
If you have an extra day, you can visit the Anjengo Fort, known for its historic significance. If you want to relax, you can spend a day at the Kappil Beach, located just a few km from Varkala. If you have less time, you can cut short your beach visit or shorten your stay at Sivagiri Mutt.
