Varkala Beach, also known as Papanasam Beach, is a popular destination for tourists due to its secluded location and stunning views. It's surrounded by cliffs that rise above the Arabian Sea, creating a breathtaking landscape. You can spend an entire day at the beach, taking in the sun, swimming in the crystalline waters or indulging in some seafood at the nearby shacks. Additionally, you can shop for souvenirs like handmade trinkets and clothes from the beachside shops.
Start your day by visiting the Sivagiri Mutt, the final resting place of the famous social reformer Sree Narayana Guru. The ashram has a peaceful ambiance with a magnificent statue of the Guru and the tomb placed in its centre. You can then head to the nearby Janardhan Swamy temple that is located atop a hill and dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The temple has a fascinating story and architecture worth exploring. At the bottom of the hill, you can find numerous shops and restaurants selling delicious local cuisine.
On your last day, you can go on a road trip to visit Anchuthengu, a small port-town, and explore the historic remains of the British East India Company's trading station. Afterward, head to Kappil Lake, a serene and tranquil location perfect for a peaceful walk or boat ride. You can also visit the nearby mangrove forest, which has a pedestrian/bike trail.
If you have more time, you can check out the nearby Varkala Cliff, a popular spot for paragliding, during day 1.
If a road trip to Anchuthengu and Kappil Lake on day 3 is not feasible, you can spend the day at the beach or explore the town's many restaurants and shops.
