The Botanical Gardens is a sprawling nature reserve covering 55 acres. It is home to an extensive collection of rare plants and flowers including a fossilized tree trunk that is over 20 million years old. Take a leisurely stroll through the gardens and enjoy the serene beauty of the lush greenery. Stop by the Toda Tribal Hut, a display of the traditional life of the Toda tribe who are the indigenous people of the Nilgiris.
Doddabetta Peak is the highest mountain peak in the Nilgiris at an altitude of 2,623 meters. The peak offers a stunning panoramic view of the surrounding hills and plains. Take a trek to the summit or drive up and enjoy the view with a cup of locally produced tea.
Avalanche Lake is an idyllic spot surrounded by groves of pine trees and rolling hills. It is a perfect spot for a picnic or a lazy afternoon by the water. Take a walk around the lake or enjoy a boat ride. Keep an eye out for the unique flora and fauna found in the surrounding region.
Mukurthi National Park is a protected area home to a variety of endangered species endemic to the Western Ghats. Take a guided trek through the park and admire the diverse flora, including the rare shola forests. The park is also home to the Nilgiri Tahr, an endangered species of mountain goat.
If you have more time, consider visiting the Emerald Lake or the Pykara Waterfalls. Both are within a short distance from the city center. However, do note that some places may be closed during the monsoon season, so it is advisable to check beforehand. If you only have a day in Ooty, consider visiting either Botanical Gardens and Doddabetta or Avalanche Lake and Mukurthi National Park.
