Auroville is an experimental township founded in 1968 and run by the Sri Aurobindo Society. The community aims to be sustainable and self-sufficient, with residents from all over the globe living and working together towards this goal. Visitors can explore the unique architecture of the Matrimandir, a large golden ball-like structure which serves as the town's focal point. There are also plenty of shops, cafes and galleries to explore on the gorgeous grounds.
Promenade Beach is a popular hangout spot for locals and tourists alike. The sea-facing promenade stretches for about 1.5 km and offers stunning views of the Bay of Bengal. After strolling along the promenade and admiring the view, visitors can head to Aayi Mandapam, a massive white monument commemorating an ancient legend. The mandapam is open to all and provides a peaceful retreat from the bustle of the beach.
If you have more time, check out the charming French Quarter and go on a culinary tour of Pondicherry's famous cafes and restaurants. If you have less time, skip Aayi Mandapam and spend more time at Promenade Beach or explore the stunning botanical gardens.
