Start your trip with Varkala Beach, also known as the Papanasham Beach, which is famous for its stunning natural setting and the distinct red cliffs overlooking the Arabian Sea. This beach attracts many thrill-seekers with its strong waves, turning it into a haven for surfers and windsurfers. Take a dip in the clear waters or stroll around the scenic stretch of coastline. Many shacks lining the seashore offer appetising seafood with cold drinks. You can enjoy a pint of chilled beer while watching the sunset over the sea.
Your next stop is the peaceful Kappil Lake, a serene estuary bordering the sea. Get ready to chill with your friends and take pictures by the backwaters amidst the scenic stretch of coconut groves. There are various small shops near the lake, offering local handicrafts and handmade souvenirs. You can also rent a speedboat to explore the estuarine environment in a unique way.
If you have more time, visit the Varkala Cliff, a stunning sunrise and sunset point where you can see the fishermen display their catch of the day. You can also visit the Janardhana Swamy Temple, located right in front of the Papanasham Beach, which is one of the oldest temples in Kerala.
If you have less time, skip the Kappil Lake and go to the Anjengo Fort instead. It's a national monument with historical importance, constructed in the 17th century when the English East India Company had control over this region.
