Papanasam Beach, also known as Varkala Beach is one of the few beaches in India where surfing is popular. The waves are consistent, and the beach has an excellent surf school that offers a two-hour beginner's lesson. It's the perfect place to learn how to ride the waves. The best time for surfing on Papanasam Beach is just before high tide.
Ponnumthuruthu Island is a small island in the middle of a backwater surrounded by coconut palms and mangroves. The island is accessible by a short boat ride from Njallikuzhi. Once on the island, there is a small temple and a few trails that lead to hidden spots. The trek is an adventure through thick vegetation and overgrown roots. There are the remains of a British cemetery on the north side of the island.
If you have more time, you can visit the Golden Island which is close to Ponnumthuruthu Island. Also, the Kappil Beach and Anchuthengu Fort are other attractions near Varkala. If you have less time, you can prioritize either surfing lessons or the trek to the island.
