One of the oldest temples in India, the Janardhanaswamy Temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is believed to be 2000 years old. The temple has a peaceful atmosphere and is adorned with intricate carvings of mythological scenes. It also has a holy pond where pilgrims take a dip before offering prayers.
A secluded island with a serene ambiance, Ponnumthuruthu Island is accessible by boat. The island has an ancient Shiva temple, a beautiful beach, and lush greenery all around. It's a great place to relax, meditate, and connect with nature.
If you have more time, you can visit the nearby beaches of Papanasam, Edava, and Thiruvambadi. You can also go on a backwater cruise in Alappuzha, which is about 2 hours' drive from Varkala.
If you have less time, you can skip Ponnumthuruthu Island or Anjengo Fort. You can also combine the visit to Kappil Beach and Varkala Cliff in a single day.
