Start your trip with a walk down the National Mall. You'll pass by some of the most iconic monuments in the city including the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial. Explore the museums of the Smithsonian Institute, such as the National Air and Space Museum, and learn about our nation's history.
Visit Georgetown, a charming historic neighborhood and shopping district. Walk along C&O Canal, stop for a coffee at Baked & Wired or a delicious cupcake at Georgetown Cupcake. If you're a fan of TV shows and movies, you may recognize some of the restaurants and cafes, such as the famous Tombs Restaurant.
Visit the Arlington Cemetery and pay your respects to the fallen soldiers. The Changing of the Guard ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a must-see. Learn about the history of the cemetery at the Welcome Center and immerse yourself in the peacefulness of the grounds.
If you have extra time, add a visit to the Holocaust Memorial Museum or the International Spy Museum in the National Mall. If you're interested in history, consider taking a day trip to Mount Vernon, George Washington's home outside DC. If you have less time, skip Georgetown and Arlington Cemetery, and opt for visiting some of the Smithsonian Museums on the National Mall.
