Two-Day Itinerary for Wayanad in June 2023

  1. Day 1: Edakkal Caves
    20 minutes (8.3 km) from Sulthan Bathery

    Explore the prehistoric Edakkal Caves which were discovered in the late 1800s. The caves contain ancient petroglyphs dating back to the Neolithic era and offer a glimpse into the past. It is a bit of a hike to reach the caves, but the views from the top are worth it.

  2. Day 1: Pookode Lake
    50 minutes (20 km) from Edakkal Caves

    Enjoy a peaceful boat ride on the serene Pookode Lake surrounded by lush greenery. The lake is home to a variety of freshwater fish and is a great spot for bird watching. There is also a nature park nearby where you can go for a short walk and spot some local wildlife.

  3. Day 1: Banasura Sagar Dam
    1 hour 10 minutes (30 km) from Pookode Lake

    Visit the largest earthen dam in India, the Banasura Sagar Dam. Take a walk around the dam and soak up the picturesque surroundings. There are also some great trekking opportunities nearby if you are up for a bit of adventure.

  4. Day 2: Thirunelli Temple
    1 hour 20 minutes (50 km) from Banasura Sagar Dam

    Explore the ancient Thirunelli Temple, which is believed to be over 1000 years old. The temple is situated amidst dense forests and is surrounded by hills. Take a dip in the nearby Papanasini River which is believed to have purifying properties.

  5. Day 2: Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary
    50 minutes (20 km) from Thirunelli Temple

    Embark on a jungle safari at the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, home to a variety of animals such as elephants, tigers, and leopards. The sanctuary is also a great spot for bird watching. Make sure to book your safari in advance.

  6. Day 2: Chembra Peak
    1 hour (30 km) from Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary

    Hike to the top of Chembra Peak, the highest peak in Wayanad. The trek is a bit challenging, but the stunning views from the top are worth it. Make sure to get a permit from the forest department before starting the trek.
