Start your first day with a trek to Chembra Peak, the highest peak in Wayanad. You will have to obtain permission from the Meppadi Forest Office before starting the trek. It takes around 2-3 hours to reach the summit, but the stunning views of the surrounding hills and the heart-shaped lake make it all worth it. Don't forget to carry enough water and snacks for the trek.
After your trek, head to the Edakkal Caves, a prehistoric site that contains petroglyphs or rock art from the Neolithic era. The caves are located on top of Ambukutty Mala hill and require a 1 km uphill walk. The petroglyphs depict human and animal figures, weapons and symbols. The view from the top is breathtaking, and you can spot the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary from here.
On your second day, visit the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, a protected area that is home to a variety of flora and fauna. You can take a guided jeep safari or trek through the forest to spot animals like elephants, tigers, leopards, deer, and langurs. The sanctuary also has a birdwatching area, where you can spot different species of birds. The best time to visit is between November and May.
After your wildlife safari, head to Pookode Lake, a natural freshwater lake surrounded by green hills and forests. You can take a paddleboat ride or go trekking through the forest trails. The lake is home to several species of fish and birds, and you can also spot monkeys and deer near the shore. There are several food stalls and souvenir shops near the lake.
