5-Day Nature Itinerary in Wayanad in November 2023

  1. Day 1: Banasura Sagar Dam
    35 minutes (15.4 km) from Kalpetta

    Start your day by exploring the Banasura Sagar Dam, the largest earthen dam in India. You can enjoy a boat ride on the dam's serene waters and take in the breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. Later, go for a nature walk in the nearby Banasura Hill where you can spot some exotic birds and animals. In the evening, enjoy a stunning sunset view with a cup of tea.

  2. Day 2: Chembra Peak
    1 hour 10 minutes (29.9 km) from Banasura Sagar Dam

    Embark on a trek to the Chembra Peak, the highest peak in Wayanad. The trek can take around 3-4 hours, and it is well worth it for the magnificent views of the valley from the top. Make sure you bring comfortable shoes, plenty of water, and snacks for the trek. The peak is closed for trekking from March to May.

  3. Day 3: Kuruva Island
    1 hour 20 minutes (33.8 km) from Chembra Peak

    Explore the Kuruva Island, a group of small islands on the Kabini River. The island is a biodiverse region filled with rare and endemic species of plants and animals. You can go for a leisurely walk or take a bamboo raft ride along the river. Do not forget to carry your camera to capture some amazing sights of the river and island. The island is closed on the rainy days.

  4. Day 4: Thusharagiri Waterfalls
    1 hour 10 minutes (33.1 km) from Kuruva Island

    Visit the Thusharagiri Waterfalls, a beautiful waterfall located amidst the Western Ghats. You can trek the forest trail to reach the top of the waterfall, from where you can enjoy the panoramic views of the surrounding forests. Take a dip in the refreshing waters of the waterfall and enjoy a picnic lunch. The waterfall is closed during the monsoon season, from June to September.

  5. Day 5: Pakshipathalam Bird Sanctuary
    1 hour 10 minutes (34 km) from Thusharagiri Waterfalls

    End your trip by visiting the Pakshipathalam Bird Sanctuary, a haven for bird enthusiasts. The sanctuary is located deep in the forest, and you need to undertake a trek to reach the spot. Along with the birds, you can also spot some wildlife such as elephants, leopards, and bison. The sanctuary remains closed on Mondays and during monsoon season.

Recommendations

If you have more time, you can visit the Edakkal Caves, Soochipara Waterfalls, and Pookode Lake. You can also take a day trip to the nearby towns of Sulthan Bathery and Kalpetta, which are known for their spice markets and handicrafts. Do not forget to try out some of the local cuisine, which includes bamboo rice, fish curry, and jackfruit dishes.
