Two Days in Wayanad

  1. Day 1: Edakkal Caves
30 minutes (9.7 km) from Kalpetta

The Edakkal Caves are a natural wonder and an important historical site. They are located on Ambukutty Mala, a hill that offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The caves contain ancient inscriptions, some dating back to the Neolithic Age, and are a testament to the area's rich history. Morning is the best time to visit as the caves are less crowded, and the sun illuminates the inscriptions. Afternoon can be spent trekking to the top of Ambukutty Mala, which takes approximately an hour, to enjoy the panoramic views. In the evening, head to the nearby Soochipara Waterfalls, where the water cascades down from a height of 200 meters and creates a beautiful rainbow effect.

  2. Day 2: Chembra Peak
35 minutes (13.5 km) from Kalpetta

Chembra Peak is the highest peak in Wayanad, standing at an altitude of 2,100 meters. The peak offers breathtaking views of the surrounding hills and is a popular destination for trekking enthusiasts. The trek to the top takes around 3-4 hours and is a challenging one, but the views from the top are definitely worth it. Start your trek early in the morning to avoid the heat of the day and carry plenty of water and snacks. Afternoon can be spent at the Pookode Lake, a serene and picturesque lake surrounded by greenery. Take a walk around the lake, go boating or just relax by the water's edge. In the evening, visit the Banasura Sagar Dam, the largest earth dam in India. The dam is a popular picnic spot and offers stunning views of the surrounding hills.

Recommendations

If you have time, consider visiting the Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary, the Wayanad Heritage Museum or the Jain Temple in Sulthan Bathery. You can also take a day trip to the neighboring town of Kozhikode, which is known for its beaches, historic sites and bustling markets. To maximize your fun, try some of the local cuisine such as appam, puttu, and kadala curry, or shop for souvenirs such as spices, tea, and coffee. Don't forget to bring comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, and insect repellent.
