Experiencing Varanasi in June 2023

  1. Day 1: Kashi Vishwanath Temple
10 minutes (3.5 km) from Varanasi Junction Railway Station

Begin your day by visiting one of the most important temples in Varanasi, Kashi Vishwanath Temple. This temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is considered one of the most sacred temples in the country. In the morning, the temple is less crowded, allowing you to offer your prayers peacefully. Afterward, try some of the local street food, like kachori sabzi, near the temple. In the afternoon, take a stroll through the lanes of Varanasi's old city, where you can shop for traditional silk sarees or visit the Vishwanath Gali, famous for its paan. Finish your day by witnessing the grand Aarti ceremony at the Dashashwamedh Ghat, where you can see devotees offering prayers to the holy Ganges River.

  2. Day 2: Sarnath
30 minutes (12 km) from Varanasi Junction Railway Station

Start your day by visiting Sarnath, an important Buddhist pilgrimage site. Here, you can visit the Dhamek Stupa, believed to be the spot where Buddha gave his first sermon. You can also visit the famous Ashoka Pillar and the Sarnath Museum. In the afternoon, visit the Banaras Hindu University, one of the largest residential universities in Asia, where you can visit the Bharat Kala Bhavan Museum, which houses a collection of Indian paintings and sculptures. End your day with a boat ride along the Ganges River at sunset, where you can witness the mesmerizing Ganga Aarti ceremony at the Dasaswamedh Ghat.

Recommendations

If you have extra time in Varanasi, consider visiting the Ramnagar Fort or the Chunar Fort, both of which are located outside the city.
