Two-Day Itinerary for Amritsar in June 2023

  1. Day 1: Golden Temple
10 minutes (2 miles) from Amritsar Junction Railway Station

The Golden Temple is the most famous attraction in Amritsar, and it's easy to see why. It's not just a beautiful temple, but also an important spiritual center for Sikhs. You'll want to spend several hours here, just taking in the peaceful atmosphere and admiring the architecture and art. In the morning, you can witness the daily ceremony of the guru Granth Sahib being transported from the Akal Takht to the sanctum. In the afternoon, you can take a guided tour to learn more about the temple's history and significance. In the evening, don't miss the Palki Sahib ceremony where the holy book is taken from the sanctum to the Akal Takht for overnight safekeeping.

  2. Day 2: Wagah Border
1 hour (17 miles) from Golden Temple

The Wagah Border is the only road border crossing between India and Pakistan, and every evening, there's an elaborate ceremony between the two countries' border security forces. It's a spectacle you won't forget anytime soon, with soldiers performing high kicks and goose-stepping while crowds on both sides cheer and wave flags. Get there early to secure a good seat and to witness the flag-lowering ceremony, which marks the end of the day of both countries and increases patriotism. The event usually lasts around 50 minutes and ends with the closing of the gates between the two countries.

Recommendations

If you're interested in learning more about Sikhism, the Central Sikh Museum is worth a visit. To get a sense of the city's history, the Partition Museum and Maharaja Ranjit Singh Museum are also good options. If you have extra time, you can also take a day trip to the nearby town of Tarn Taran to see the Gurdwara Sri Tarn Taran Sahib and the historic fort of Gobindgarh.
