In the morning, take a 4.5 km trek to the top of Chembra Peak, the highest peak in Wayanad. It is a moderate trek that will take around 3 hours out and back. In the afternoon, head to Pookode Lake, a natural freshwater lake nestled in the hills, and take a boat ride or go for a walk around the lake. Spend your evening at Soochipara Waterfalls, a three-tiered waterfall that cascades down from a height of 200 meters. You can take a dip in the natural pool at the base of the falls.
In the morning, visit the Edakkal Caves, a set of two natural caves with ancient petroglyphs (rock carvings) dating back to the Neolithic era. The caves are located on top of a hill, and the trek up takes around 45 minutes. In the afternoon, go to the Kuruva Island, a protected river delta with dense forest cover and a variety of flora and fauna. You can take a walk around the island and take a dip in the river. In the evening, head to the Banasura Sagar Dam, the second-largest earth dam in Asia. You can take a boat ride on the reservoir and enjoy the scenic views.
If you have an extra day, you can visit the Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary, a protected area with elephants, tigers, leopards, and other wildlife. You can also go to the Thirunelli Temple, an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu that is located in the middle of the forest. If you want to experience local culture, you can visit the Uravu Bamboo Village, a community-based initiative that promotes sustainable bamboo-based livelihoods.
If you want to maximize your fun, plan your trip during the monsoon season (June to September) when the waterfalls are at their full flow and the forests are lush green. Make sure to carry an umbrella or raincoat and appropriate footwear. You can also go on a night safari in the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary to spot nocturnal animals like the Indian Civet Cat, Slender Loris, and Jungle Cat.
Finally, don't forget to try the local cuisine, which includes dishes like Puttu and Kadala Curry, Appam and Stew, and Malabar Biriyani.
