2-Day Itinerary for Amritsar in July 2023

  1. Day 1: The Golden Temple
10 minutes (2.3 km) from Amritsar Railway Station

The iconic Golden Temple, also known as Harmandir Sahib, is a must-visit and a perfect start to your trip. You can witness the morning ceremony where the holy book is brought to the temple, followed by the daily rituals and the Langar (community kitchen) serving free meals. Afternoon hours are perfect for exploring the temple complex, admiring the intricate architecture, and taking a dip in the holy Sarovar. In the evening, attend the Palki Ceremony, where the book is taken back to the Akal Takht Sahib.

  2. Day 1: Jallianwala Bagh
6 minutes (1.3 km) from The Golden Temple

Visit the site that witnessed one of the most tragic incidents in Indian history. The memorial park is a reminder of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, where hundreds of unarmed civilians were killed by the British army. The park has a museum and a light and sound show in the evening. Spend the afternoon at the nearby markets, where you can shop for souvenirs and try local street food. In the evening, head to Sadda Pind, a cultural village that recreates the traditional Punjabi lifestyle and offers an exciting dining experience.

  3. Day 2: Wagah Border
1 hour (32 km) from Amritsar city center

Experience the patriotic fervor as you witness the daily ceremony at the India-Pakistan border. The Beating Retreat and the lowering of the flags ceremony are performed with enthusiasm by the soldiers from both sides, and the crowd cheers them on. The ceremony takes place in the afternoon, so it's advisable to leave early. On the way back, visit Gobindgarh Fort, a historic fort that has been recently renovated and has a light and sound show in the evening.

  4. Day 2: Partition Museum
20 minutes (7.5 km) from Wagah Border

The Partition Museum is a unique museum that showcases the stories and artifacts of the millions of people who were affected by the partition of India in 1947. The museum has audio-visual exhibits, personal stories, and a library. Spend the afternoon at the nearby Lawrence Road Market, which has a range of shops and eateries. In the evening, visit the Gurdwara Shaheed Ganj Sahib, a historic gurdwara that is dedicated to the Sikh martyrs.
