4-Day Shoestring Budget Itinerary for Sikkim in July 2023

  1. Day 1: Gangtok
    45 minutes (31.1 km) from Pakyong Airport

    In the morning, visit the Enchey Monastery and the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology to learn about the region's rich cultural heritage. For lunch, try some local delicacies like momos and thukpa at the MG Marg Market. Spend the afternoon at the Banjhakri Waterfall, a picturesque spot to relax and take in the beautiful surroundings. In the evening, explore the Flower Exhibition Centre to view a variety of flowers unique to the region.

  2. Day 2: Pelling
    2 hours 30 minutes (115.1 km) from Gangtok

    Start your day early and head to the Kanchenjunga Waterfall. Post that, visit the Pemayangtse Monastery, one of the oldest and most significant monasteries in Sikkim. For lunch, treat yourself to some authentic Sikkimese cuisine at one of the local food joints. Spend the afternoon exploring the Rabdentse Ruins, an archaeological site with stunning views of the valley. In the evening, take a leisurely stroll around the quaint town of Pelling.

  3. Day 3: Lachen
    6 hours 30 minutes (123 km) from Pelling

    Start your day early and head to the Gurudongmar Lake, one of the highest lakes in the world. The lake is believed to be holy and has great significance in the Buddhist and Hindu religions. For lunch, stop at a small eatery en route to Lachen and try some piping hot momos and thukpa. After reaching Lachen, visit the Lachen Monastery and soak in the serene surroundings. In the evening, take a walk around the village and interact with the friendly locals.

  4. Day 4: Yumthang Valley
    2 hours 30 minutes (50.7 km) from Lachen

    Start your day early and drive to the Yumthang Valley, also known as the 'Valley of Flowers.' The valley is home to a variety of exotic Himalayan flowers and is a sight to behold. After lunch, visit the Yumesamdong, also known as Zero Point, which is the last outpost of civilization before the Tibetan plateau. In the evening, head back to Gangtok and spend some time exploring the city.

Recommendations

Make sure to visit the Tsomgo Lake, a glacial lake located en route to Nathula Pass. If you're interested in adventure sports, try river rafting in the Teesta River. You can also visit the Lachung and Yumthang Valley if you have more time on your hands.
