Two Days in Puducherry: A Journey Through French India

  1. Day 1: Aurobindo Ashram
10 minutes (2.5 km) from Puducherry Railway Station

The Aurobindo Ashram is a spiritual community that was founded by Sri Aurobindo and his disciple, Mirra Alfassa (The Mother) in the early 20th century. The ashram provides a peaceful and serene retreat from the bustling streets of Puducherry. In the morning, visit the Ashram's Samadhi (memorial) and meditate in its tranquil surroundings. The afternoon can be spent exploring the Ashram's art gallery and library. End the day with an evening meditation session at the Ashram.

  2. Day 2: Promenade Beach
5 minutes (1.3 km) from Aurobindo Ashram

Promenade Beach, also known as the Rock Beach, is a beautiful seafront that stretches for 1.5 km from War Memorial to Dupleix Park. Enjoy a morning stroll on the beach and take in the fresh sea breeze. The afternoon can be spent exploring the French Quarter where you can find many colonial-era buildings, cafes, and boutiques. In the evening, take a walk along the beachfront promenade and enjoy the cool breeze.

Recommendations

While in Puducherry, make sure to also visit the Manakula Vinayagar Temple, which is dedicated to the Hindu god Ganesha. It is located just a few minutes from the Promenade Beach. For a side trip, consider visiting the nearby town of Auroville, an experimental township that is based on the principles of human unity and spiritual evolution. Finally, for a unique experience, take a guided food tour of the city and sample some of the best local cuisine.
