2-Day Nature Itinerary in Darjeeling in June 2023

  1. Day 1: Tiger Hills
20 minutes (6.6 km) from Darjeeling town

Start your day early and head over to Tiger Hills to witness the breathtaking sunrise. At 8482 feet, this is the highest point in Darjeeling and offers a panoramic view of Mount Kanchenjunga, the third-highest peak in the world. The morning mist and the stunning play of light makes it a sight to behold. After that, head over to the nearby Observatory Hill and visit the Mahakal Temple, a holy site for both Hindus and Buddhists. In the afternoon, visit the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park, home to endangered species like Snow Leopard and Red Panda. End your day with a stroll around the Darjeeling Mall, where you can shop for local souvenirs and try some local snacks.

  2. Day 2: Singalila National Park
3 hours (54.6 km) from Darjeeling town

Today, head over to Singalila National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, for a day-long trek. The park is known for its stunning flora and fauna, and offers panoramic views of the Himalayas. Be sure to carry enough water, snacks and warm clothes as the trek can get challenging at times. The trek to Sandakphu, the highest peak in Singalila, is highly recommended. Alternatively, you can opt for an easier trek to Tonglu, which is equally scenic. In the evening, relax and unwind at one of the many cafes and restaurants at Darjeeling town, and enjoy the local cuisine.

Recommendations

If you have time, visit the Happy Valley Tea Estate, one of the oldest tea gardens in Darjeeling, and take a guided tour to learn about tea cultivation and production. You can also consider a visit to the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, which houses a museum on mountaineering history and offers courses on mountaineering. A day trip to Mirik Lake, located about 50 km from Darjeeling, is also a good option for those interested in boating and fishing. Don't forget to try the local Darjeeling tea, momos and thukpa, which are popular dishes in the region.
