3-Day Itinerary for Amritsar in July 2023

  1. Day 1: Golden Temple
    10 minutes (2.3 km) from Amritsar Railway Station

    The Golden Temple, also known as Harmandir Sahib, is the holiest shrine for Sikhs. Marvel at the glittering gold-covered architecture and take a dip in the holy Amrit Sarovar. In the morning, join the pilgrims in the recitation of the morning prayers and enjoy a free vegetarian meal at the Guru ka Langar. In the afternoon, learn about the history and culture of Sikhism at the Central Sikh Museum and visit the Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of Sikhism. In the evening, witness the Palki Ceremony, where the Holy Book of Sikhs is carried from the main shrine to the Akal Takht.

  2. Day 2: Jallianwala Bagh and Wagah Border
    5 minutes (1.1 km) from Golden Temple to Jallianwala Bagh, then 1 hour 10 minutes (32.6 km) from Jallianwala Bagh to Wagah Border

    In the morning, pay homage to the martyrs of the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre by visiting the memorial and the Martyrs' Gallery. Learn about the tragic event that happened on 13 April 1919, when British soldiers opened fire on a peaceful gathering and killed hundreds of unarmed civilians. In the afternoon, head to Wagah Border to witness the Beating Retreat Ceremony, where the Indian and Pakistani soldiers perform a military drill and lower their respective national flags. Experience the patriotic fervour as the crowd cheers for their country. Note: Wagah Border ceremony may not take place on certain days. Check the schedule beforehand.

  3. Day 3: Ram Bagh and Partition Museum
    20 minutes (7.9 km) from Wagah Border to Ram Bagh, then 10 minutes (3.2 km) from Ram Bagh to Partition Museum

    In the morning, take a relaxing stroll in the Ram Bagh Gardens, also known as the Company Bagh, which was laid out by the founder of Amritsar, Guru Ram Das. Admire the lush greenery, the summer palace of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, and the statue of the Maharaja riding a horse. In the afternoon, visit the Partition Museum to learn about the traumatic event that divided India and Pakistan in 1947. The museum displays personal stories, archival footage, and artefacts related to the partition. In the evening, savour the local cuisine at the numerous eateries in the old city, including the iconic Kesar Da Dhaba and the legendary Giani Tea Stall.

Recommendations

If you have extra time, consider visiting the Durgiana Temple, the Mata Lal Devi Mandir, or the Khalsa College. You can also take a day trip to the historic city of Amritsar and visit the Ram Tirth, the Gobindgarh Fort, or the Pul Kanjari. To experience the local culture, attend the Punjabi cultural show at the Sadda Pind or the Gobindgarh Fort. To maximise your fun, try the street food like Amritsari Kulcha, Lassi, and Falooda. You can also shop for souvenirs such as Phulkari embroidery, Punjabi Jutti, and Amritsari pickles. Lastly, make sure to witness the flag-lowering ceremony at Wagah Border, but be prepared for the crowds and the security checks.
