Katra Family-Friendly Itinerary for June 2023

  1. Day 1: Vaishno Devi Temple
    12 minutes (4.2 km) from Katra

    In the morning, visit the Vaishno Devi Temple which is one of the most important Hindu pilgrimage sites in India. Devotees believe that the goddess Vaishno Devi grants wishes to those who visit the temple. After the darshan, you can walk around the surrounding hills and enjoy the beautiful scenery. In the afternoon, you can visit the Bhairavnath Temple, which is dedicated to the deity who guards the Vaishno Devi Temple. In the evening, you can explore the local shops and enjoy some delicious street food.

  2. Day 2: Dera Baba Banda
    40 minutes (20 km) from Katra

    In the morning, head to Dera Baba Banda, a Sikh pilgrimage site situated on the banks of the Chenab River. This site is believed to be the resting place of the famous Sikh warrior Baba Banda Singh Bahadur. After visiting the gurudwara, you can take a dip in the holy river. In the afternoon, you can visit the Patnitop hill station, which offers breathtaking views of the Himalayas. You can enjoy a picnic or go for a hike in the beautiful surroundings. In the evening, return to Katra and relax at your hotel.

  3. Day 3: Himkoti
    10 minutes (5 km) from Katra

    Start your day early and head to Himkoti, which is located halfway to the Vaishno Devi Temple. This scenic spot offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. After enjoying the view, you can visit the Charanpaduka Temple, which is located nearby and is said to be the place where the goddess Vaishno Devi took her first step. In the afternoon, you can visit the Raghunath Bazaar, which is famous for its handicrafts and souvenirs. In the evening, you can visit the Aghar Jitto Temple, which is dedicated to the Hindu saint Aghar Jitto.

Recommendations

If you have extra time, you can visit the Baba Dhansar Temple, which is located about 15 km from Katra and is famous for its natural waterfalls. You can also take a day trip to Jammu, which is about an hour away and is famous for its historic forts and beautiful temples. To maximize your fun, make sure to try some of the local delicacies such as rajma chawal, khatta meat, and kawa tea. Finally, make sure to carry comfortable shoes and warm clothes as the weather can get chilly in the mountains.
