Darjeeling Family-Friendly Itinerary for June 2023

  1. Day 1: Tiger Hill
    30 minutes (7.2 km) from Darjeeling town center

    In the morning, catch the sunrise from Tiger Hill, one of the best views in Darjeeling. Then, head to Ghum Monastery, the oldest Tibetan Buddhist Monastery in Darjeeling. In the afternoon, visit the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute to learn about mountain climbing. End the day with a relaxing stroll at the beautiful Darjeeling Mall.

  2. Day 2: Darjeeling Himalayan Railway and Tea Gardens
    20 minutes (3.6 km) from Darjeeling town center

    Take a morning train ride on the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, also known as the "Toy Train." Then, visit the Happy Valley Tea Estate, one of the most famous tea gardens in Darjeeling. In the afternoon, explore the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park, home to endangered species like the red panda and snow leopard. End the day with a visit to the Japanese Peace Pagoda for a beautiful sunset view.

  3. Day 3: Batasia Loop and Rock Garden
    30 minutes (7.2 km) from Darjeeling town center

    Start the morning with a visit to the Batasia Loop, a railway loop that offers stunning views of Darjeeling and the surrounding mountains. Then, head to the beautiful Rock Garden, a terraced garden with waterfalls and a beautiful river. In the afternoon, visit the Tibetan Refugee Self Help Centre to learn about Tibetan culture and handicrafts. End the day with a delicious dinner at one of the many local restaurants in Darjeeling.

Recommendations

If you have time, consider visiting the Singalila National Park for a scenic trek and stunning views of the Himalayas. Another great side trip is a visit to the nearby town of Kalimpong, known for its beautiful orchids and traditional handicrafts. To maximize your fun, try some of the local Darjeeling tea and momos, a traditional Tibetan dumpling. Don't forget to bring warm clothing, as it can get chilly in the mountains even in June.
