A Perfect Day in Lisbon

  • 9:00am - Belem Tower - Visit one of Lisbon's most famous landmarks, a 16th-century fortification built on the bank of the Tagus River. The tower has two parts: a lower bastion that was used for gunpowder storage, and an upper tower that served as a watchtower. Be sure to climb to the top for a spectacular view of the river and the city.
  • 11:00am - Pasteis de Belem - After visiting the tower, head over to Pasteis de Belem for some of the most famous pastries in Portugal. These custard tarts are a must-try when visiting Lisbon. Be prepared for crowds, though - this place is always busy!
  • 12:00pm - Jeronimos Monastery - Located just down the road from Pasteis de Belem is the Jeronimos Monastery, another iconic Lisbon landmark. The monastery was built in the 16th century and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Be sure to visit the church, the cloisters, and the maritime museum while you're here.
  • 2:00pm - Alfama District - Take a stroll through the narrow streets of Alfama, one of Lisbon's oldest neighborhoods. This picturesque area is home to many small shops, restaurants, and cafes. Head up to the Castelo de Sao Jorge for a sweeping view of the city.
  • 4:00pm - Lisbon Oceanarium - Visit one of the largest aquariums in Europe. The Lisbon Oceanarium is home to over 8,000 different animals from over 500 species, and is a must-visit for any animal lover.

Useful Tips

If you have more time in Lisbon, consider taking a day trip to Sintra to visit the fairytale-like Pena Palace. Alternatively, if you have less time, consider skipping the Lisbon Oceanarium to allow for more time exploring other areas of the city. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes, as Lisbon is quite hilly and requires a lot of walking. Finally, don't forget to try some local cuisine - Lisbon is famous for its seafood dishes.
