Five-Day Adventure Itinerary in Hanoi, Vietnam (August 2023)

  1. Day 1: Hoan Kiem Lake
    Centrally located in Hanoi's Old Quarter
    Estimated Time: 20 minutes, 0.7 miles

    In the morning, take a stroll around Hoan Kiem Lake and visit the Ngoc Son Temple, located on an islet in the middle of the lake. Then, head to the nearby St. Joseph's Cathedral, one of the oldest churches in Hanoi. In the afternoon, explore the bustling streets of the Old Quarter and enjoy some street food. End the day with a visit to the Water Puppet Theatre.

  2. Day 2: Ba Vi National Park
    Located 60 km west of Hanoi
    Estimated Time: 2 hours, 1.5 miles

    Head out of the city to Ba Vi National Park, a beautiful nature reserve with lush green forests, mountains, and waterfalls. Take a hike to the summit of Ba Vi Mountain or explore the many walking trails in the park. In the afternoon, visit the 11th-century Duong Lam Ancient Village, which is known for its well-preserved traditional architecture.

  3. Day 3: Halong Bay
    Located 170 km east of Hanoi
    Estimated Time: 3.5 hours, 2.5 miles

    Take a day trip to Halong Bay, a stunning UNESCO World Heritage site known for its emerald waters and limestone cliffs. Take a boat tour of the bay, explore the many caves and grottoes, and enjoy a seafood lunch on board. Return to Hanoi in the evening.

  4. Day 4: Cat Ba Island
    Located 150 km east of Hanoi
    Estimated Time: 4 hours, 3 miles

    Head back to Halong Bay and take a ferry to Cat Ba Island, the largest island in the bay. Explore the island's many beaches, national parks, and caves. Rent a kayak and paddle through the floating villages or go rock climbing on the limestone cliffs. In the evening, enjoy some fresh seafood at one of the island's many restaurants.

  5. Day 5: Perfume Pagoda
    Located 60 km southwest of Hanoi
    Estimated Time: 2 hours, 1.5 miles

    Take a day trip to the Perfume Pagoda, a complex of Buddhist temples and shrines built into the Huong Tich limestone mountains. Take a boat ride down the Yen River and hike up to the temples, which offer stunning views of the surrounding countryside. On the way back to Hanoi, stop at the Van Phuc Silk Village to see how silk is made and buy some souvenirs.

Recommendations

If you're interested in history, visit the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology. If you want to experience Hanoi's nightlife, head to the Old Quarter and enjoy a drink at one of the many bars or nightclubs. For a day trip, consider visiting the Bat Trang Ceramic Village, the Cuc Phuong National Park, or the Tam Coc-Bich Dong Caves. To maximize your fun, try to learn some basic Vietnamese phrases and haggle at the markets for the best prices. And don't forget to try some of Hanoi's famous dishes, such as pho, bun cha, and banh mi!
