Kedarnath Winter Itinerary - January 2024

  1. Day 1: Visit Kedarnath Temple
    Located within the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary
    15 minutes (3.5 km) from Kedarnath Helipad

    In the morning, visit the famous Kedarnath Temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. The temple is situated amidst the majestic Himalayas and offers breathtaking views of the surroundings. Afternoon, explore the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary that is home to a variety of flora and fauna. In the evening, attend the evening aarti at the temple and soak in the spiritual atmosphere.

  2. Day 2: Trek to Vasuki Tal Lake
    Starting point - Gaurikund
    2 hours (9 km) from Kedarnath Temple

    Embark on a beautiful trek to Vasuki Tal Lake, located at an altitude of 14,200 feet. The trek starts from Gaurikund and takes around 6-7 hours to complete. The trail offers stunning views of the Himalayan peaks and the lake is surrounded by snow-capped mountains. Spend some time at the lake before heading back to Kedarnath. Be prepared for the cold weather and carry appropriate gear.

  3. Day 3: Visit Bhairavnath Temple and Gandhi Sarovar
    Located near Kedarnath Temple

    In the morning, visit the Bhairavnath Temple, dedicated to Bhairav, an incarnation of Lord Shiva. The temple is located near the Kedarnath Temple and can be reached by foot. Afternoon, head to Gandhi Sarovar, a glacial lake named after Mahatma Gandhi. The lake is surrounded by picturesque mountains and is an ideal spot for some peaceful time. In the evening, return back to Kedarnath.

  4. Day 4: Explore Chorabari Glacier and Gaurikund
    Starting point - Kedarnath Temple
    2 hours (4 km) from Kedarnath Temple

    Embark on a trek to Chorabari Glacier, also known as Gandhi Sarovar Glacier. The trek starts from Kedarnath Temple and takes around 4-5 hours to complete. The glacier offers stunning views of the surrounding peaks and is a popular spot for adventure enthusiasts. Afternoon, visit Gaurikund, a quaint little town that serves as the base for the trek to Kedarnath. Take a dip in the hot springs and relax in the serene atmosphere. Return back to Kedarnath in the evening.

  5. Day 5: Visit Triyuginarayan Temple and trek to Tungnath
    Starting point - Sonprayag
    2 hours (45 km) from Kedarnath Temple

    In the morning, visit the Triyuginarayan Temple, located at the spot where Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati got married. The temple is surrounded by beautiful mountains and offers stunning views. Afternoon, embark on a trek to Tungnath, the highest Shiva temple in the world. The trek starts from Chopta and takes around 3-4 hours to complete. The temple is located at an altitude of 3,680 meters and offers breathtaking views of the Himalayas. Return back to Kedarnath in the evening.

Recommendations

For a more immersive experience, consider staying at a local homestay and interacting with the locals. Also, make sure to try the local cuisine, especially the traditional Garhwali dishes. If you have some extra time, you can also visit the nearby towns of Guptkashi and Rudraprayag. For a side trip, you can visit the scenic Deoria Tal Lake, located around 60 km from Kedarnath. Make sure to carry appropriate gear and clothing for the cold weather.
