A 4-Day Family Friendly Itinerary for Uttar Pradesh in June 2023

  1. Day 1: Agra
    2 hours 35 minutes (141.8 km) from Delhi

    In the morning, visit the Taj Mahal, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Take a guided tour to learn about the history and architecture of this magnificent mausoleum. In the afternoon, visit the Agra Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site that offers a stunning view of the Taj Mahal from its walls. In the evening, enjoy a sound and light show at the fort which narrates the story of its Mughal rulers.

  2. Day 2: Varanasi
    12 hours (800 km) from Agra

    In the morning, take a boat ride on the Ganges River during sunrise to witness the spiritual rituals of Hindu devotees. After breakfast, visit the Sarnath archaeological site, where Buddha gave his first sermon. In the evening, attend the Ganga Aarti ceremony, a Hindu ritual offered every evening to river Ganga. It is a mesmerizing experience to watch the floating lamps and the sounds of conch shells.

  3. Day 3: Lucknow
    9 hours 30 minutes (318.5 km) from Varanasi

    In the morning, visit the Bara Imambara, an architectural marvel that is also known as the Asfi Mosque. It is a maze-like monument with secret passages and a large hall without any pillars. After lunch, visit the British Residency, a historic site that played an important role in the Indian Rebellion of 1857. In the evening, take a stroll in Hazratganj, a popular shopping and entertainment area in Lucknow.

  4. Day 4: Mathura and Vrindavan
    3 hours 40 minutes (150 km) from Lucknow

    In the morning, visit Mathura, the birthplace of Lord Krishna. Visit the Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi temple and the Dwarkadhish temple. After lunch, visit Vrindavan, a town dedicated to Lord Krishna and his childhood pastimes. Visit the Banke Bihari temple, the ISKCON temple and the Prem Mandir, a beautiful temple made of white marble. In the evening, attend the Subh Sandhya Aarti at the Banke Bihari temple.

Recommendations

If you have more time in Agra, visit Fatehpur Sikri, a deserted city built by Emperor Akbar in the 16th century. In Varanasi, you can take a day trip to the nearby city of Allahabad to attend the Kumbh Mela, a Hindu festival held every 12 years. In Lucknow, try the local cuisine, especially the kebabs and biryanis. In Mathura and Vrindavan, you can attend the Holi festival if you are visiting in March. If you have more time, visit the Chambal Wildlife Sanctuary near Agra or the Dudhwa National Park near Lucknow. To maximize your fun, hire a local guide for each destination to learn more about their history and culture.
