Start your Costa Rica adventure by heading to Arenal Volcano National Park. This lush and green rainforest is home to the famous Arenal Volcano, which last erupted in 2010. Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve offers a unique opportunity to explore a misty forest full of dense vegetation, cloud forests and panoramic views. Take the Suspension Bridge Walk, to explore the forest canopy from a different perspective, or opt for the Sky Walk for even more impressive views. Don't miss the chance to spot the elusive quetzal bird that's often seen in this reserve.
Travel to Corcovado National Park, which is home to 13 different ecosystems and over 500 different plant species. The park is also rich with wildlife, including jaguars, tapirs, and monkeys. With nature and wildlife all around you, make sure to stop for a picnic lunch and enjoy the stunning landscapes. Relax in Playa Llorona, one of the park's most idyllic beaches. However, be aware of tides, swimming is not advisable.
End your trip by visiting Manuel Antonio National Park. This park is the perfect combination of beach and wildlife. The park itself is small, but has a lot to offer. You'll find hiking trails, several picturesque beaches and many species of flora and fauna. Don't be surprised if a monkey joins you for a beach picnic. You can also enjoy swimming and snorkeling in the turquoise waters of the Pacific Ocean.
When travelling around Costa Rica, buses and shared shuttles services are good options to travel, both locally and around the country. Services run frequently and are reliable. Budget around $5 for each ride. For longer distances, internal flights can save you time traveling from one region to the other. Prices vary depending on the destination, but usually are around $100-$220.
If you have more time, venture to the Osa Peninsula and visit Caño Island, considered one of the best spots to snorkel and dive in Costa Rica. You can also escape from city life and relax in hot springs available at some of the properties in Monteverde, Arenal or Tabacon. If you have less time, shorten the visit to Corcovado National park or visit Carara National Park and experience the transition between the dry, northern Costa Rican forests and the southern, rainier regions.
